**The Thing I Keep Putting Off**
There is a task that has lived on my to‑do list long enough to start paying rent.
You know the type: not urgent enough to cause immediate chaos if ignored, but important enough to give you a small, consistent sense of failure every time you remember it. For me, it’s cancelling my phone plan. It’s been quietly mocking me for weeks.
Every few days, I decide, very dramatically, that *today is the day*. I open my phone, find the number… And then something in my body slams on the brakes. My chest gets tight, my thoughts scatter, and suddenly I’m doing literally anything else: reorganising a folder, doomscrolling, deciding that now is the perfect time to deep-clean the bathroom.
On paper, it makes no sense. The task would probably take fifteen minutes. But when I sit with it, I realise it’s not actually about time. It’s about everything attached to it: the possibility of bad news, the fear of being perceived, the thought of “getting in trouble” (a thought/feeling that’s been haunting me since childhood), or even simply the thought of having to speak to a complete stranger when I do not want to.
So the task waits. And I wait with it.
I’m trying a new approach: instead of yelling at myself to “just do it already,” I’m asking what this avoidance is protecting me from. Sometimes the answer is practical; sometimes it’s embarrassingly emotional.
Either way, I’m starting to think that the thing I keep putting off isn’t just a task. It’s a mirror. And maybe I’ll get it done sooner if I stop treating myself like a lazy assistant and start treating myself like a person who’s scared.
I don’t know. Is anyone else putting something off right now? I think it would help to hear I’m not the only one feeling this way.
